5th Grade Target Goals #3 Focus

 

Math:  Identify equivalent periods of time, including relationships between and among seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years (e.g. 60 seconds = 1 minute) 3.5.6

Language Arts: (Writing) Write informative papers that develop a clear topic with supporting details 5.5.1

Trait Focus: Organization

(Reading) Identify main ideas, fact and opinion, or cause and effect; summarize and draw conclusions (focus: cause and effect) 2.5.3

Science:  Explain to other students how to go about solving numerical problems (5) 6.11

9:00-9:05         Walk in, lunch count, roll

 

9:05-9:55         Literacy Block

                        9:05-9:30         Spelling          

Obj.         Use spelling strategies to spell correctly. Spell correctly frequently used words, with special attention to roots, and suffixes. 7.5.5

Proc.       Monday – pass out spelling List 9 and students complete an open sort. (See lists) Tuesday and Wednesday – Students will study words and choose two activities from a menu of spelling activities.

Thursday – Class spelling game. Friday – Spelling test.

Eval.       Teacher observation, collect and correct spelling activities and tests.

Mater.    Spelling lists, spelling menu, basic classroom supplies.

 

                        9:30-10:00       Vocabulary

                                                Latin Roots this week:  gen  - birth Worksheet p. 13-14

Obj.         Use phonics, and syntax to determine the meaning of words. 1.5.2 Know roots and affixes from Greek and Latin to analyze meaning. 1.5.3 Use dictionaries and glossaries to determine meanings, and features of words. 1.5.4 Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. 1.5.5

Proc.       Monday – pass out vocabulary List 9 and introduce words. Access students’ prior knowledge. Tuesday – Students look up words in dictionary and record meanings. Wednesday – Students list synonyms and antonyms of words. Thursday – Students write words in sentences correctly. Friday – Students take vocabulary test.

Eval.       Weekly quiz on Friday.

Mater.    Vocabulary lists, basic classroom supplies.

                       

10:00-10:50     Specialist Classes Monday- PE, Tuesday – Library, Wednesday –Art, Thursday – PE, Friday – Music (10:55-11:45)

 

                        10:50-11:30 Reading

                        Obj.         Students will identify the main idea of non fiction text.

                                Proc.       Students will read and answer the questions from the passage,                 “The Great Wall   of China”.

                                Eval.       Collect student work, correct together if time permits.

                                Mater.    Handout “The Great Wall of China”.

 

11:30-12:00     Writing/Social Studies

                        Obj.         Students will learn about the early explorers who explored North and South                                                           America.

                                Proc.       Students will work in groups to research an explorer. They will create a script                                                        for a television interview forming higher-level thinking questions. Two students                                                            will be the interviewers and the third student will be the ghost of the explorer.                                                               Students will video tape there interviews complete with costumes and props.                                           Eval.       Students will watch all the taped interviews and provide feedback.

                                Mater.    Explorer books from library, SS text book, Internet, computers, video camera.        

 

12:00-12:40    Lunch/Recess

 

12:40-2:00       Math

                                Daily Multiplication Timed Test – Students will immediately recall and use and apply basic facts of multiplication and division through 12’s. 1.5.1

                                Mountain Math – Students will work on five math problems each day. They can begin as they finish their timed test.

Review Target Skill- Use bridge map!

Obj.         Students will learn how use variables to write algebraic expressions that describe real-world situations. 2.5.4

Proc.       Whole group – Read and discuss Chapter 2 Lesson 14 p. 106-107, students will complete the “Check” problems orally with a partner, students will complete the “Practice” problems individually on scratch paper and then compare their answers with another member of their group, students will complete

Handout P-2-14 in class or at home as time permits.

Eval.       Teacher observation, collect and correct work.

Mater.    Math text, above handout, basic classroom supplies.

 

2:10-2:30         Silent Reading in Content Areas

Obj.         Read silently daily from science and social studies content areas. Students will discern main ideas and supporting evidence. 4.5.2, Read to evaluation new information and hypotheses by comparing them to known information and ideas. Interpret information in new context. 4.5.3 Draw conclusions and make inferences supported by textual evidence. 4.5.4

Proc.       Students read silently at their desks. 2-3 students may sit on the couch. Students read from the science and social studies textbook and class library as assigned.

Eval.       Students participate in class/group discussion and record thought and ideas in their reading response journals.

Mater.    Books and reading response journals.

 

2:30-3:00         Social Studies
