Class Expectations
I like to start the first day of school with this poem as I explain my expectations to my class. I expect more than just pretty good. I expect every student to do his or her best on every assignment and project done in my classroom.

By striving to do our best (even when my best may look totally different from my neighbor's best) we are rewarded through a feeling of accomplishment that comes along with the effort we put into our task.

I hope you find it as inspirational as I did when I first read it!

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 5th grade at Goolsby Elementary. I am so excited you are in my class! I know this will be a great year. We are going to reach high standards of excellence as we start this exciting adventure together. Besides all the great school activities, we will be having many adventures in our own classroom that will help make us better leaders.

Our classroom is a classroom/technology lab. We will sharpen our communication skills with pencils and keyboards. We will use Internet research skills, web-page creation, desktop publishing, and multimedia production to enhance our learning and share what we learn. The world is our classroom, and it is only a click away! Besides all our technology fun, we will do many activities to build class spirit and learn to work together. In the spring, we will be performing William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This will be a great event that you will want to share with all your family members. Each of you will bring your unique talents and expertise to our class. I know we will learn from each other.

Reading is an essential skill for success this year. You will be asked to read each school night and record your reading minutes on a reading log. We will be participating in the Read Across America program. It is never too late to make reading quality material a priority.

In fifth grade this year, you will have a chance to earn your Great American Award. This award will be earned as you learn and memorize American facts like the 50 states and capitals, US Presidents, Gettysburg Address, The Star-Spangled Banner, the Pledge, and the Preamble to the US Constitution.

At the end of fifth grade you will be anxious to move on to middle school, but you will want to make the most of each day before you leave Goolsby. It all begins on Monday, August 29, 2005 at 8:50 a.m. See you soon!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cheri Garner
